Plant FAQ
Annuals – Annuals are plants that perform their entire life cycle from seed to flower to seed within a single growing season. All roots, stems and leaves of the plant die annually. Only the dormant seed bridges the gap between one generation and the next.

Perennials – Perennials are plants that persist for many growing seasons. Generally the top portion of the plant dies back each winter and regrows the following spring from the same root system. Many perennial plants do keep their leaves year round and offer attractive borders and groundcover. When starting perennial plants from seed, blooms will be observed in either the Spring or Summer of the second year and each year thereafter. Most plants offered by Collections Etc. are perennials. Examples of perennials include: Cotton Candy Grass, Hens and Chicks, and Rainbow Torch Lilies.

Biennials – Biennials are plants which require two years to complete their life cycle. First season growth results in a small rosette of leaves near the soil surface. During the second season's growth stem elongation, flowering and seed formation occur followed by the entire plant's death.
Fertilize once you see signs of new growth and then every three weeks after until September 1st.
To enhance the blue shades, you need acidic soil. This can be achieved by adding aluminum sulphate. In order to bring about pink flowering, the soil needs to be more alkaline. Lime can be added to raise the alkalinity of the soil. These changes do not take effect quickly. You may need to wait a whole season for visible differences.
It will get 8 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide within two years.
Once a tomato reaches its full size and becomes a pale green color, it will begin the ripening process. Harvest the fruit from the vine when it is about half green and half pink. At this point, the fruit has reached the “breaker” stage and is no longer receiving any nutrients from the plant. Place the fruit inside in a warm location to complete the ripening process. Ripening is actually a function of temperature rather than sunlight so it doesn’t have to be kept in front of a bright window.

We are sorry to hear that your plant looks like it may need a bit of TLC when it arrives. At Collections Etc., we strive to send you the best quality product for the best price and we want to make sure you are happy with your new plant. To care for your plant after it has been received, refer to the plant guide that is provided with your new plant. Most plants are picked and packed from a dormant state 3-5 days before they arrive to your door. Once your plant is replanted at its new home it will begin to sprout new foliage within a few weeks. Just give it time to set its roots before you expect new foliage. Most plants bounce back fine. While your bulb may appear it has a substance that looks like mold, we assure you that this does not affect your plants in any way. This appearance may occur due to the climate in the truck changing through different parts of the country. The substance generally wipes off with a damp towel.
If the white is powder-like, it is most likely a type of mildew that can be taken care of with fungicide. If it is more like cotton, you may have a spidermite infestation and will need to get a pesticide. Make sure to cover the entire plant-branches, the tops and undersides of each leaf-with your treatment.
Since horticulture items are living plants, we do apologize but they cannot be returned. Up until a plant has been picked, packed and shipped out, it is in a protected growing environment for dormancy. Once we remove the plant from this fragile state, it is expected to be planted into soil immediately upon receipt by the customer. Any extended delay in planting may cause the plant to have unfavorable results. We ship your plants to you at the best time for planting in your area; the sooner you can get them in the ground after arrival, the more successful you will be. We recommend that you prepare your soil and planting beds ahead of time so that you are ready to plant just as soon as your plants arrive.

Be sure to open the shipping carton immediately upon arrival to promote air circulation, and then review the instructions included. If you are not able to plant immediately, keep the opened carton in a cool place protected from direct sun. Complete instructions for preparing soil, planting and growing are included with each shipment.
