First flown in 1938, The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the United States Navy's workhorse dive-bomber during World War II. The cockpit accommodated the pilot who manned a fixed-forward gun, and the rear cockpit contained a machine gun as a major defense role. Purposely designed holes on the brake flaps helped the plane achieve pinpoint accuracy when diving to the target.
